• Sharjah Museums Department Takes Part In Sharjah Ramadan Festival With An Innovative Mobile Exhibition

Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) is proud to be staging an innovative mobile exhibition at the Sharjah Ramadan Festival 2014 – a major celebration that has been organized to mark the Emirate’s year as Capital of Islamic Culture.

Mindful of the Holy Month, during which Muslims embark on their very special spiritual journeys, the exhibition entitled ‘Travel through the land…’’ (29:20) presents objects from its top museums, chosen to explore mankind’s travels and journeys through time and space, from antiquity to the future, because of the need to survive, to trade, as a religious duty or as a result of mankind’s desire for new discovery and adventure. As visitors take their own journey through the exhibit, every one of the objects is carefully chosen to tell a story that makes connections with their lives – their history, heritage, way of life and – most importantly – their faith.

Ramadan is a time to strengthen relationships and bonds within our society. People come together to renew their faith and deepen their commitment to their culture and identity. Sharjah Museums Department recognizes that museums have an important role to play in celebrating and strengthening these connections. As result, several of Sharjah’s museums have contributed to the exhibition, among them the Sharjah Archeology Museum, the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, the Sharjah Art Museum, the Sharjah Heritage Museum, the Sharjah Maritime Museum, the Sharjah Classic Cars Museum, the Al Mahatta Museum and the Sharjah Science Museum.

The exhibition will open on the first day of Ramadan and will remain open throughout the Holy Month from 8.30pm to 1.30am on weekdays and 8.30pm to 2.00am on weekends, and from 5pm to 11.00pm during Eid. Admission to the Sharjah Expo Centre, where the Ramadan Festival will be held, is free. In addition to the exhibition, the Sharjah Ramadan Festival 2014 will encompass numerous events and activities and is expected to attract significant numbers of visitors and residents to the Expo Centre Sharjah.

One of the main events during the Ramadan Festival will be the Islamic Book Fair., SMD will also be launching a new publication at the book fair titled, “Islamic Textiles from the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization’. This important publication – the second in a series highlighting masterpieces in the rich collections of the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization – for the first time introduces the religious textiles collected by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi in a comprehensive and academic way.
