World Renowned Artist Bill Fontana To Give Lecture To Abu Dhabi Youth

Attendees have opportunity to apply for the ’Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts Award’ and work with Bill Fontana to develop their own sound-based projects

International sound artist Bill Fontana will be giving a lecture at the New York University Abu Dhabi Campus on Wednesday, January 15th. In this fascinating lecture, the founding father of sound art will expand upon his unique practice of creating ‘sound sculptures’ over the past thirty years and across nearly every continent. The free to attend session will cover the evolution of technology, its role in the recording and dissemination of sound and in shifting our perceptions of the world around us.

Student attendees will have an opportunity to apply for the Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts Award and winners will work with Bill Fontana to develop their own sound sculpture, which will be showcased alongside his work at the World Premiere exhibition, ‘Acoustical Visions’ in March as part of the Abu Dhabi Festival 2014.

H.E. Mrs Hoda I. Al Khamis-Kanoo, Founder and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival, said: “The Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts award is one of our most prestigious honours. By allowing students to work directly with Bill Fontana on the unique form of artistic expression known as sound sculpturing, they will not only gain rare access to one of the world’s most renowned artists, but will further extend their understanding of the unique relationship between technology and art for which Bill Fontana is greatly recognised.”

The lecture will take place at the Multipurpose Room at New York University Abu Dhabi at 12pm on Wednesday, the 15th of January. Seats are limited and can be reserved by emailing nadia.b@admaf.org.

During his visit, Fontana will also be gathering sounds in the Emirate for a new work commissioned by the Abu Dhabi Festival. ‘Desert Soundings’, will be revealed at the Abu Dhabi Festival on 21st March.
