More than 371 million people worldwide have diabetes with almost 50% of people unaware that they have the condition. The United Arab Emirates is ranked 11th worldwide with the highest prevalence rate of diabetes, about 20% population in 2012 and this is mainly due to bad eating habits and lack of exercise.

According to the latest figures, the number of people suffering from the disease worldwide is expected to increase to 552 million by 2030 as opposed to 371 million people in 2012, which inflicts a substantial burden on governments’ budgets with the increasing costs of treatments and medicine and reduced productivity for a large segment of the productive youth population.
