Sharjah Museums Teach Your Students The Art Of Calligraphy Contest Concludes At A Special Award Ceremony At Sharjah Calligraphy Museum

Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) has announced today the winners of its Teach your Students the Rat of Calligraphy competition at a prize-giving ceremony which has been held in collaboration with the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum on Thursday 27 June.

The contest has been growing in popularity every year since its inception in 2008, and aims to enhance participants’ calligraphy skills. The ceremony honored the winning students for their beautifully written scripts, which plays an important role in preserving the region’s calligraphic heritage and further developing this art for generations to come.

The award ceremony started with a welcome speech to greet the students and their parents, and to thank the participants, teachers and judges for their involvement in the contest, the winners, comprising both male and female students from various age groups, received certificates and prizes in recognition of their outstanding creative work.

Touring exhibition entitled ’Small Fingers’, featuring the winning artworks was launched on the sidelines of the ceremony, and will continue to be displayed at Sharjah Calligraphy Museum until 15 August 2013.

Explaining the importance of calligraphy, Manal Ataya, Director General of SMD, said, “This genuine Arabic and Islamic art form links the literary heritage of the Arabic language with the religion of Islam. In an increasingly diverse Arab and Islamic world, Arabic calligraphy is unifying element of Islamic art. By instilling an appreciation of calligraphy in our children, we are preserving not only the Arabic language but also Arab and Islamic culture".

The contest is launched at the beginning of each school year and gives schools the chance to host the touring Teach your Students the Art of Calligraphy exhibition for a week. The exhibits comprise 20 manuscripts from Sharjah Calligraphy Museum’s collection, written in different scripts by renowned calligraphers from around the world. Teachers can then encourage inspired students to participate in the competition by submitting their own creative calligraphy works to the museum.

This year, the competition received 360 entries from students at schools across the UAE.
