• Tecom Gears Up For earth Hour Celebrations

ENPARK, a member of TECOM Investments and a free zone business park dedicated to facilitating and fostering the growth of the alternative energy and environmental industries in Dubai, will lead a campaign for this year’s HYPERLINK "http://www.earthhour.org/" Earth Hour.

Earth Hour, an annual event held on a global scale, was initiated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and aims to reduce waste and energy consumption around the world by raising awareness of global warming. Earth Hour 2013 will take place on Saturday, March 23 at 8:30pm.

ENPARK will celebrate Earth Hour by switching off non-essential lights across TECOM Investment’s 10 business parks for 60 minutes between 8:30pm to 9:30pm. Other planned activities include lighting up an Earth Hour ‘60’ logo by placing candles at Dubai Internet City’s Amphitheatre at 6:00pm.

Dubai residents are encouraged to participate in creating the ‘60’ logo dedicated to the initiative, which will help to raise awareness about Earth Hour and its sustainability message. Participants will also be asked to write personal pledges to save more energy.
Saeed Bin Ghubash, Director of ENPARK said: “At TECOM Investments, every hour is Earth Hour. Since inception, we have embarked on a mission to foster economic growth but in an environmentally sustainable way. Our efforts are not limited to Earth Hour and at every step we acknowledge the importance of protecting the planet by conserving resources.”

Last December, ENPARK worked in collaboration with Averda and Air Miles to roll out 15 new ReVa reverse vending machines across TECOM’s business parks, making them the first free zones in the UAE to provide the innovative recycling machines. ENPARK also marked the United Nations’ World Environment Day (WED) 2010 with the launch of a light disposal unit to recycle the electric bulbs and lamps in TECOM’s business parks.

Saeed added: “The region is growing at a rapid pace with infrastructure developments at an all-time high. New industries are being set-up to support the expansion of various industrial sectors and commercial hubs, which are powering Dubai’s growth. Factoring in green initiatives into a company’s business plans is not only important for the long-term good of the environment, but also for substantial returns on financial investment. The Earth Hour initiative sends out an important message of sustainability, bringing together both individuals and companies.”

Participation in Earth Hour is one of a series of initiatives led by TECOM Investments since the launch of its Sustainable Development Policy in 2006. Earlier this year, TECOM was recognised as a ’Verified Corporate Hero’ by the Emirates Wildlife Service and WWF ‘Heroes of the UAE’ programme after delivering on its three environmental pledges, which included developing and implementing a measurable strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions associated with energy and water consumption by 10% each over 12 continuous months.

In addition, ENPARK has received high profile recognition, such as being included in the ’Company of the Year’ category at the Alternative Energy Awards 2008, for its significant role in raising awareness about sustainability in the region. More broadly, ENPARK has been widely acknowledged for its work towards achieving the UAE’s aspirations to adopt greener practices and sustainability concepts.

During the celebration, ENPARK will reward individuals committed to the Earth Hour initiative by handing out travel prizes offered by Dnata. The event is sponsored by Arabian Radio Network and Goumbook, the Middle East’s first Green Business Directory.

A number of other TECOM business parks are participating in Earth Hour 2013, including: DuBiotech, Dubai Internet City, Dubai Studio City, Dubai Media City, Dubai Industrial City, Dubai International Academic City, Dubai Knowledge Village, Dubai Outsource Zone and International Media Production Zone.
