• TRA Participates In 32nd Meeting Of The Arab League Permanent Committee For ICT

    The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), participated in the 32nd meeting of the Arab League’s Permanent Arab Committee for Information and Communication Technology, hosted in Doha, Qatar from March 5 to 6 2013. The Committee focused on preparations ahead of key ITU meetings next year and the high level discussions that took place at the event will undoubtedly be critical to the region’s ICT sector.

    TRA participates regularly in the meetings of this committee, for the importance of the work it does in crafting the policies and guidelines for some of the important ICT topics in the region. The discussions that take place at the Arab League Permanent Committee for ICT meetings are absolutely fundamental in the mission to safeguard the future of the ICT sector in the Arab world.

    The meeting of the Permanent Committee addressed a whole host of ICT related topics. The outcome of the meetings of task forces affiliated to the Arab Committee were discussed as well as the progress of both the Arab work team for measurement and the Arab work group for operating to the activities of the Regional Arab Office of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The activities of the Arab Information and Communication Technology Organization (AICTO) in Tunisia and the Arab Regulators’ Network were also discussed in addition to the Arab Dialogue on Internet Governance (ArabDIG) Initiative, and the latest development of the Arabic domain name and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) domain names project that TRA supports.

    The UAE also conducted several presentations during the meeting, which included a report about the international events of the ITU, which was chaired by the UAE and hosted in Dubai last year for the first time in the Arab World and the Middle East. The UAE delegation also highlight the importance of forming new work groups to prepare for the international conferences next year that includes the International Telecommunications development Conference in Sharm Al Sheikh in Egypt, and the representatives conference in South Korea in 2014.

    Representing a collective of experts from a range of countries, the ICT Arab League Permanent Committee for ICT was formed as part of an initiative from the Council of Arab Ministers of ICT for the Arab League and its Executive Office. The mission of the committee is to discuss the topics presented to the Executive Office and the Council of Arab Ministers of ICT. Convened twice a year, the Arab League Permanent is held prior to the meetings of the Executive Office and the Council of Ministers.
