• Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority And GEMS Education To Host ’Maker Day Dubai 2013’

Event to Feature Products of over 100 Aspiring Innovators and Entrepreneurs

Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), the integrated free zone technology park, in conjunction with GEMS Education is set to host ‘Maker Day Dubai 2013’, showcasing the creations of individuals or groups that invent, design, and/or build a product with the goal of learning, teaching, inspiring, or improving the world around them.

The event is scheduled to be held on 23rd March at the Cedre Shopping Centre in Dubai Silicon Oasis, from 10:00am - 4:00pm. Participants are invited to register for the event at www.gemseducation.com/makerday before 6th March, 2013.

Organised in the format of a science fair, items that qualify for display at Maker Day Dubai 2013, must be original. Exhibits could range from a personally designed app and video game to robotics and engineering projects to unique cupcakes and balloon art.

Maker Day Dubai 2013 will invite visitors to cast their votes to evaluate stall owners in the categories of most innovative, most surprising, most inspiring, most useful and for the best use of recycled materials.

Ghanim Al Falasi, Senior Vice-President - Corporate Services, DSOA, said: “The event is a celebration of creativity. It is also an opportunity to foster youth entrepreneurship in our society and discover tomorrow’s inventors. We are confident the event will bring the community together to applaud deserving talent while offering a platform for people to achieve their aspirations.”

Maker Day Dubai is inspired by the success of the community event organized previously by GEMS Wellington International School – WIS Maker Day - which attracted not just the school fraternity, but corporates that demonstrated innovation and technology leadership.

The collaboration between GEMS Education and DSOA for Maker Day Dubai, has taken the event to a larger scale event that will allow a wider number of talented people in Dubai to showcase their talent. Dino Varkey, Group Chief Operating Officer and Board Member - GEMS Education, said: “We thank DSOA for expanding the scope of our successful event, WIS Maker Day. It has always been our aspiration to build on the success of our event and involve a larger section of the community. It is motivating to see individuals particularly children demonstrate their innovative and entrepreneurial skills. We are confident that such initiatives will hone their capabilities and encourage the invention of commercial tools and gadgets in the near future.”

The 2012 edition of WIS Maker Day drew the participation of Microsoft, Pinewood Derby - Boy Scouts of America, The Change Initiative and a large number of students, teacher and parents. Some of the activities included robotics, recycled materials mosaic, game design, Xbox technology, product design and testing, marshmallow balloon rockets, recycled bottle Burj Khalifa and magnetic ooblek that proved a huge crowd puller.
