• Dubai Culture Brings Patronage To The Forefront With The 4th Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patrons Of The Arts Awards

The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated Authority for culture, arts, and heritage, will once again shine the light on patronage of the arts with the fourth edition of the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patrons of the Arts Awards.

Reaching out to patrons and beneficiaries across the city for driving the growth of its cultural and artistic landscape, the fourth cycle of the awards has called for submissions until March 1, 2013. Potential applicants can visit www.patronsofthearts.ae to download and submit their nominations.

A path-breaking initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patrons of the Arts Awards aims to honour individuals, organisations, and Government entities for their financial and in-kind support towards spearheading the development of the city’s artistic scene.

The awards, held annually, honour the passion and enthusiasm of patrons through four categories: ‘Distinguished Patrons of the Arts,’ ‘Patrons of the Arts,’ ‘Supporters of the Arts,’ and ‘Friends of the Arts,’ for their support towards the four main disciplines of art – visual arts, performing arts, film, and literature.

Saeed Al Nabouda, Acting Director General, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, said: “In just four years, the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patrons of the Arts Awards have come to be one of the prestigious titles to be bestowed in the region. The awards have played an integral role in enhancing awareness on the need for patronage to the various disciplines of arts, from both the public and private sector.

“With over 47 patrons honoured during the third cycle of the awards, many of whom had been nominated several times since the inception of the award in 2009, the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patrons of the Awards will continue to identify and encourage new patrons to support the culture and art’s scene in Dubai,” he added.

In 2012, the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patrons of the Arts Awards honoured patrons for contributing AED 165 million to the city’s artistic landscape, mapping a 24 percent growth compared with the previous year.
Forty-four percent of those honoured in the third cycle were new patrons, with a 17.5 percent overall increase in patrons, underscoring an increased interest among organisations and individuals in driving the arts sector; while 15 percent of the patrons comprised Government departments and organisations, a 75 percent increase compared with the first cycle.

Visual arts accounted for 50 percent, followed by a remarkable increase in patronage for film, which accounts for 42 percent of total contributions. Performing arts and literature accounted for four percent of patronage, respectively.

Dubai’s diverse breadth of cultural and artistic events include: Art Week, comprising SIKKA Art Fair, Art Dubai, and Design Days Dubai; Dubai International Film Festival, Gulf Film Festival, Emirates Airline Festival of Literature and Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre, which are a testament to the support from patrons towards the culture and arts scene of the city.
