• Mcgraw-Hill Ranks #8 In The Civic 50

The National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) and Points of Light – the nation’s definitive experts on citizenship – have recognized McGraw-Hill as one of The Civic 50’s top 10 most community-minded companies in America.

Created to identify and recognize companies making a difference in communities, The Civic 50 is a partnership among Bloomberg News, the NCoC and Points of Light to examine how businesses engage the communities they serve and align these practices with their underlying core business competencies.

McGraw-Hill’s demonstrated commitment to corporate civic engagement in the communities where we do business earned us the #8 spot in the rankings. Some highlights of our civic engagement are our commitment to financial literacy, global volunteer activities, student mentoring programs, career coaching for recent immigrants and support for microfinance institutions. Our community investments also include in-kind book donations and the generous
contributions made through our employee matching programs which last year totaled nearly $2 million.

Through our matching and volunteer programs, our employees also consistently support relief and recovery efforts for disasters including the tsunami in Japan, the East African food crisis and most recently, Hurricane Sandy.

“Good corporate citizenship is at the heart of how we conduct business and everything we do,” said Terry McGraw, CEO. “We have aligned our business and philanthropic focus to fill the large and critical need for greater financial literacy, helping more than 200,000 students; and we have one of the best employee volunteer programs anywhere, tripling the number of employees volunteering over the last five years.”

The Civic 50 survey evaluated McGraw-Hill on several elements, including leadership, measurement and strategy, design, employee civic health, community partnerships, cause alignment and transparency.

“The exemplary standard set by your company will not only offer a learning opportunity for your peers, but also make a strong public statement about the importance of corporate participation in public life,” wrote David B. Smith, Executive Director of the NCoC, when he notified McGraw-Hill of the results.
