The cream of Dubai society are preparing for a Seventies-themed extravaganza on March 8 to raise funds for charity and pay tribute to the lifetime achievements of a leading figure in the oil and gas industry.

Meydan racecourse will roll out the red carpet for an estimated 2,000 guests on the 10th anniversary of The Oil Barons Charity Ball, one of the UAE’s best loved and most glamourous charity events, which in the last five years alone has raised a staggering AED2.4 million for the Sharjah-based Friends of Cancer Patients.

Titled ‘The Glitter Ball’, this year’s gala will make a beeline for the disco era, with Abba tribute band ‘Take A Chance’ performing a slew of the Swedish pop stars’ most famous hits and the racecourse venue lavishly decorated in the themed colours of purple and silver.

While the ball’s best-dressed competition is guaranteed to be a major attraction, crowning the Oil Baron of 2013 will be the main event of the evening. The annual lifetime achievement award recognises a senior oil and gas executive in the UAE for his or her tireless contribution to innovation, employee development, promotion of the wider industry, and the local community.

Alistair Davidson of engineering management consultancy SPD took the mantle last year and he and previous Barons will assemble on stage to acknowledge the winner of the award in its 10th anniversary year, chosen by a five-strong judging committee from dozens of nominations.

“The annual Oil Barons Charity Ball is an eagerly awaited opportunity to celebrate industry excellence and the performance of one’s industry peers, which only adds to the prestige of the Oil Baron award,” said Simon Mellor, Senior Vice President at dmg::events.
“Business networking and enjoyment will be the main priority on the night but the event has a serious mission at its heart – to raise much-needed funds for cancer awareness and the work of one of the UAE’s most deserving charities,” added Mellor. “That’s why we’ve opted for a purple and silver colour scheme this year – purple for charity and silver for glamour!”

The Oil Barons Charity Ball collected more than AED1 million for the Friends of Cancer Patients Society (FOCP) last year – and the organisers will be hoping to raise the bar even higher with a host of opportunities to give generously on March 8.

Three hundred glasses of Laurent Perrier, priced at AED1,000 each, will be sold on the night, with the lucky owner of one of the crystal flutes winning a two carat diamond donated by award-winning jewellery designer Farah Khan.

All the proceeds from the raffle will go to the FOCP and as if that wasn’t enough, guests will be lining up to bid for a variety of other unforgettable experiences, including limited VIP packages to attend the Dubai Tennis Championships and exclusive packages to enjoy the world’s richest horserace, the Dubai World Cup, donated by Dubai Duty Free.

Individual tickets for The Oil Barons Charity Ball start from US$350, while a table of 10 costs between US$3,000 and US$5,000. Corporate sponsorship packages are still available and nominations for the 2013 Oil Baron close on February 1.

Held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the ball is organised by dmg::events and sponsored by The Kanoo Group, Scott Safety, Dynomax, Bulwark, Triplefast Middle East and Top Oilfield, among other leading corporations.

The Oil Barons Charity Ball is the largest corporate donor to the Friends of Cancer Patients Society (www.focp.ae), a charitable, volunteered-based organisation established in 1999 under the Supreme Council of Family Affairs in Sharjah.

The society provides emotional, financial and medical support to cancer patients in the UAE, irrespective of gender, religion or nationality, and promotes awareness of cancer, its prevention and early detection.
