With governments urgently seeking new ways to address their clean water supply and wastewater treatment challenges, particularly in arid regions like the Middle East, the need for investment to support sustainable water developments and innovations is greater than ever.
The Project Stream at the International Water Summit (IWS) which is hosted by Masdar and will take place from 15 – 17 January 2013 in Abu Dhabi offers a major opportunity for project developers, investors and solution providers to connect and accelerate the building of sustainable water solutions.
This exciting IWS initiative will bring together project owners from the MENA region and potential partners from all over the world in a business marketplace forum where project owners can pitch their development-stage projects to event participants, especially the world’s leading engineering, technology, service and financial solution providers.
“GCC countries have been investing heavily on water sustainability over the last few years”, explains Peter McConnell, Show Director for the IWS, “and the Project Stream will in essence become a networking platform that will connect solution providers from around the world to project developers from the region”.
“These projects range from multi-billion dollar government infrastructure ventures to high-tech innovations in areas such as low-energy desalination, water leakage prevention and water efficiency which will all contribute in a significant way to addressing the worldwide challenges surrounding clean water supply.”
With the Washington-based World Bank reporting that the Middle East and North Africa region is the most water-scarce region in the world, home to 6.3% of the world’s population yet with just 1.4% of the world’s renewable fresh water, the Project Stream at IWS is the ideal forum to match entrepreneurs in the highly dynamic MENA water market which will help bridge the gap and alleviate the stress suffered by so many communities.
The Project Stream is run in association with respected industry think-tank Global Water Intelligence (GWI). GWI reports that Qatar is planning to invest $1.1 billion in desalination capacity through independent water and power projects (IWPPs) between 2013 and 2017. Kuwait has a combined municipal water/wastewater capital expenditure budget of $4.4 billion from 2013 to 2016, while the UAE’s budget reaches a significant $13 billion.
GWI also states that Saudi Arabia will have to spend $53.9 billion over the next two decades to build, operate and maintain water projects to meet demand in the Kingdom.
The Project Stream is a tangible and practical example of the solutions-based approach being taken at the inaugural International Water Summit, as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
“The Project Stream not only brings together suppliers and partners for business opportunities, but it will also provide valuable market intelligence for projects with some of the world’s leading water experts presenting case studies on water projects that have been successfully implemented in the region,” said Mr McConnell.

The International Water Summit is a new global platform for promoting water sustainability in arid regions. As a natural extension of the UAE’s commitment to sustainability, IWS will bring together policymakers, scientists and business leaders to tackle the urgent challenges of wastewater and water access and security.
