• Zayed Future Energy Prize To Discuss Trends In Sustainability Innovation At World Future Energy Summit

Leveraging the knowledge base and expertise of its ever-growing global community, the Zayed Future Energy Prize is set to host an engaging programme from 15 - 17 January for visitors to the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

Toward this purpose, the Prize will set up a ’presentation theatre’ at its stand at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), the venue of the 2013 World Future Energy Summit (WFES).

The three-day agenda will include a series of discussions that brings together leaders and innovators to examine the prospects of renewable energy, trends in sustainability, and strategies that help keep pace with the science of climate change.

The presentations will include thought-leadership sessions on ’Transitioning for Scale in Off-Grid Solar Markets’ by Orb Energy, first runner-up for the 2012 Prize in the SME/NGO category; ’The Renewables Revolution: Keeping up with the Science of Climate Change’ by Jonathon Porritt, a member of the Prize Selection Committee; and ’Future of the Resilient and Sustainable Electric Grid post-Hurricane Sandy’ by Derek Walker, director of the California-based Environmental Defense Fund, 2012 runners-up of the Prize in the SME/NGO category.

As part of its outreach programme with schools, the Prize has invited the nine finalists in the Global High Schools category to share their perspectives on sustainability engagement and practices. The discussion will be hosted on 16 January at the Zayed Future Energy Prize stand. As part of their visit to the UAE, the students from the shortlisted schools will also be speaking to public and private schools in the UAE to exchange ideas on sustainability and renewable energy projects.

An open panel titled ’Leadership in Sustainability: A Personal Perspective on Catalysing the Sustainability Industry’ will additionally take centre-stage on 16 January at ADNEC, Capital Suite 10.

The panel will be headlined by Her Excellency Elizabeth Dipuo Peters, Minister of energy, South Africa; Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Secretary General of the Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi, and the Zayed Future Energy Prize Selection Committee chair; Dr. Jose Goldemberg, professor of physics at the University of Sao Paulo; Michael Liebreich, CEO of Bloomberg New Energy Finance; and Ditlev Engel, CEO of Vestas and the 2011 Zayed Future Energy Prize winner in the Large Corporation category.

The Zayed Future Energy Prize is a $4m prize awarded annually to companies, schools and individuals that have made significant contributions to the future of energy, sustainability and climate change. The Prize will be presented to winners in five categories on 15 January, 2013 at a distinguished awards ceremony.
