• Al Tayer: Dubai Metro Ridership Hit 5.9m In September 2011

    1.277 Million Commuters Used The Green Line In 20 Days

    The Roads & Transport Authority – Mohammed Al Munji: His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), revealed that number of commuters who used the Dubai Metro Green Line since opened for the public on 10/09/2011 till the end of September last (20 days) clocked 1.277 million passengers whereas the number of riders on the Red Line during September (30 days) hit 4,661,469 passengers. This brings the total number of commuters who used both the Red and Green Lines in September last to 5,938,461 passengers.

    Al Tayer was delighted with these positive indicators of growth in the metro users; which confirm that RTA plan to increase mass transit users was moving in the right direction and that there was a change & evolution in the community’s culture and attitudes towards using public transport means. It also indicated that people started to perceive the benefits & advantages of using public transport such as the psychological and physical relief in the smooth mobility, and reduced costs of fuel and maintenance of vehicles.

    “The number of the metro riders on both the Red & Green Lines across the Union Station is estimated as 30 thousand passengers per day and the ridership on the Green Line has consistently picked up towards the end of September. More passengers are expected to use the Metro with the onset of winter and the inflow of passengers to tourist and heritage attractions, particularly at Al Shindagha,” stated Al Tayer.

    “Al Fihaidi Station attracted the biggest number of users on the Green Line in September as it was used by 156 thousand passengers, followed by Bani Yas Station, which serves a densely populated residential and commercial district as it was used by 153 thousand passengers, next comes Oud Metha Station (97,358 passengers), Al Ghubaiba Station (about 97 thousand passengers), Salah Uddin Station (85,649 passengers), and Khalid bin Al Waleed (82,352 passengers). Ridership in the rest of stations ranged between 28 thousand to 77 thousand passengers,” he continued.

    “As for the Red Line of the Dubai Metro, the Union, Khalid bin Al Waleed, Deira City Center and Mall of the Emirates Stations still have the lion share in the number of metro users. The Union Station has been used in September by 423 thousand passengers, and the number of users clocked 389,500 passengers in Khalid bin Al Waleed Station, 371,448 passengers in Deira City Center Station, and 330,500 passengers in Mall of the Emirates Station whereas the number of commuters ranged in the remaining stations ranged from 52 thousand to 293 thousand passengers,” said RTA Chairman of the Board and Executive Director in a final remark.
