The Stock Market and Corporate Investment

The primary intended purpose of a stock market is to channel savings cheaply to firms that wish to make investments. But there is a dark side: a listing on a stock market can change managers’ incentives in detrimental ways. This lecture will discuss the resulting trade-off between low-cost funding and distorted incentives in view of new evidence from the U.S. and other countries; specifically, detrimental features of US stock market regulations, such as quarterly reporting, that undermine productive investment.
