Dubai Government Departments Briefed On Status Of UAE Bid To Host 2020 World Expo In Dubai

In-depth briefing provides government communications specialists with insights and tools to promote bid as part of the UAE’s 18-month campaign to host the World Expo

In line with the UAE’s bid to host the 2020 World Expo in Dubai, the Expo 2020 bid team today provided a briefing to a range of Dubai government departments on the status of this national effort to bring the Expo to the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia region for the first time in the event’s 160-year history.

Held as part of a series of informational sessions focused on the Expo, this in-depth briefing offered communications specialists in the Dubai government the necessary insights into the bid, as well as tools with which to promote this national endeavour among a range of stakeholders.

This briefing took place as the UAE’s bid efforts truly start to gather steam, with a national awareness campaign launching across the country in June.

Dubai, UAE, is competing against four other candidate cities bidding to host the 2020 World Expo, including Ayutthaya (Thailand); Ekaterinburg (Russia); Izmir (Turkey); and Sao Paulo (Brazil). The winning city will be announced in November 2013 following a vote by the 160 member nations of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the international organisation responsible for overseeing the calendar, bidding, selection and organisation of World Expos.

The Dubai government department briefing also comes ahead of the UAE’s upcoming bid presentation to the BIE General Assembly in Paris, where the organisation is headquartered, representing one of five occasions when the UAE will be able to make its case for hosting the 2020 World Expo to the fully assembled BIE members.

That upcoming presentation, which will take place in early June, will be led by members of the Higher Committee for Hosting the World Expo 2020, which was formed by decree by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, in his capacity as Ruler of Dubai.

The UAE is currently hosting a National Pavilion at the 2012 International Expo in Yeosu, South Korea, a three-month event that kicked off on May 12 and is expected to attract up to 8 million visitors from across the world.

Under the 2012 Expo theme “Living Seas,” the UAE Pavilion offers visitors a virtual window onto the geography, peoples, cultures and traditions of the country, and builds upon the UAE’s tradition of hosting National Pavilions at previous Expos – including in Hanover, Lisbon, Seville, and, most recently, Shanghai.
