Dubai International Poetry Festival 2009
The Dubai International Poetry Festival 2009, an initiative by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, today announced it will aim to revive the popular tradition of ’Souk Ukadh’, reiterating the modern day relevance of what was once renowned for its rich poetic tradition and eloquent rhythmic prose. To be hosted from 5.00pm to 10.00pm every day, Souk Ukadh will be a key component of the Dubai International Poetry Festival that will be held from 4-10 March. It will bring back memories of the old souk of the pre-Islamic and Islamic eras where amidst the buzz of the markets, literary contests would be held for prominent poets. Such gatherings would bring together audiences, particularly merchants, from neighbouring towns and cities and even lead to flourishing trade relations throughout the region.
