• Dubai Duty Free Celebrates 20 Years of World-Class Golf

What started as a concept for bringing together representatives of the duty free industry to Dubai for a few days of friendly competition has turned out to be one of the most successful and popular golfing events on the duty free calendar.

For two decades, this prestigious event has consistently attracted top executives from the duty free industry worldwide, with players coming from Great Britain, Germany, France, Ireland, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Netherlands, as well as from regional duty free operations in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Qatar and Bahrain.

On November 28 and 29, Dubai Duty Free will mark the 20th year of the Dubai Duty Free (DDF) Golf World Cup tournament, which will take place at the Montgomerie Dubai and Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club. Commenting on the forthcoming tournament, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice-Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, said: “The 20th running of this tournament represents a major milestone for Dubai Duty Free and we are looking forward to welcoming over 100 players this year. The players enjoy the atmosphere of friendly competition, and the social interaction makes it a good meeting place for those involved in the duty fee industry. Des Smyth, who has been our regular golf pro and guest on several occasions, is coming back to join us in our celebration.”

The past champions of the DDF Golf World Cup include Steve Flanagan (1993/1996), Raimund Legnar (1994), Brendan O’Shea (1995), Noel Fox (1997- 2000), Jan Baljet (2001), Ulrik Moller (2002), Adel Zarooni (2003-2004), Art Miller (2005), John Kammerman (2006), Nayma Maya (2007), Mark Van Huesden (2008), James Kfouri (2009), Gurbax Singh (2010), and Clark Francis (2011). The two-day tournament is open to amateur players with a maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies. The 36 holes are played in accordance with Stableford rules, with players playing off full handicap.

Following the first day of golf on November 28, guests will be invited to relax and enjoy Dubai Duty Free’s customary hospitality at the ever-popular Irish Village, with special entertainment lined up for the evening.

The tournament, which is organised by Dubai Duty Free, takes place during an extremely busy week in Dubai starting with the Middle East Exclusive being held at Dubai World Trade Centre on November 25-27. This is followed by the Middle East Duty Free Association (MEDFA) conference being held at the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel located on Aviation Club grounds on November 26 and 27. This conference will feature top industry speakers addressing regional and global issues. The MEDFA Conference marks its 11th anniversary this year and Dubai Duty Free will host its Gala Dinner.

DDF’s sporting involvements continue in December with the Emirates Dubai Rugby 7’s, to be held at the Sevens Dubai from November 29 to December 1, in which Dubai Duty Free will co-sponsor the Scottish team along with The Irish Village. The airport retailer will also be a sponsor of the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters from December 2-8 at Emirates Golf Club and the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championships on December 14 and 15 at Mina Seyahi.
